OpenVidu 2.29.0: simulcast and finer video-quality controls
OpenVidu 2.29.0 is out, and as co-founders of the project we're glad to share what's new. Full details are in the release notes; the highlights:
- A new simulcast directive in OpenVidu Components — available in Enterprise Edition deployments running on Mediasoup — letting a publisher send multiple quality layers at once, so each subscriber gets the layer that fits their own connection instead of one fixed quality for everyone.
- New resolution and frame-rate directives, for configuring custom video quality per stream instead of only at a global level.
- A fix for a long-standing connectivity bug: participants left in a "ghost" state by a random client-side network drop — still shown as connected even though the connection had already dropped — are now evicted from the session as soon as the problem is detected.
If you're running OpenVidu Enterprise on Mediasoup, the simulcast directive is worth a closer look first: it's exactly the kind of adaptive-quality behavior that's painful to build well yourself, and it's now available declaratively instead of through custom client code. The full changelog is in the GitHub release.
