OpenVidu 3.8.0: mediasoup reaches feature parity with Pion
OpenVidu 3.8.0 is out, and as co-founders of the project we're glad to share what's new. Full details are in the release notes; the highlights:
- mediasoup reaches feature parity with Pion, at roughly 2x its performance. The restrictions that used to make mediasoup a scaled-down alternative engine are gone: full RTX support (retransmission, which mitigates packet loss under poor network conditions), full DTX for Opus audio (saving up to 90% of bitrate during silence), and H264, VP9, and AV1 codec support, where earlier versions forced VP8.
- ConnectionQuality events are now available in mediasoup, matching a capability Pion already had.
- A screen-share simulcast bug is fixed. Layer selection used to pick a low-quality layer incorrectly once a screen went static; it now properly selects the highest-quality layer each participant's bandwidth allows.
This release also closes out two releases we hadn't covered here yet. 3.6.0 (March) added DigitalOcean support via Terraform templates, alongside restricted-network/NAT support and hardened TURN relay security. 3.7.0 (May) added Oracle Cloud Infrastructure support for Single Node deployments and, notably, finally upgraded mediasoup to 3.19.19, unstuck from 3.12.16, where PRO had been stuck since 2023; that upgrade is what made 3.8.0's feature-parity work possible in the first place.
Between the mediasoup work and the growing list of cloud targets (AWS, GCP, DigitalOcean, and now Oracle Cloud), this release is about giving PRO users a real choice of engine without a real trade-off, and about deploying wherever makes sense for your infrastructure.
